Welcome to our website for the older person. This is the original Silver Surfer's Seventy site. We are teachers
of computer skills in the UK, and most of our students are over seventy. We understand how overwhelming the Internet
can be if you haven't grown up with it. We know there are many older people who have their own computer and probably use it
a little for emailing, but feel daunted, frustrated or even enraged by the Internet. You waste so much time getting lost, you
can't find what you want, and anyway wouldn't it be quicker to pick up the phone ... but then you end up in a queue and get routed
to India. You suspect that one day you might actually need the Internet; and anyway it would be nice to know where
to find a post code, especially if you're not quite as mobile as you were.
That's why we've put this site together.
We've collected over seventy tried and trusted sites, for people based in the United Kingdom. We've chosen them because
they are practical, helpful and well designed. We've made it easier for you by briefly describing each site, and rating it with
our teacups rating system, to give you an idea of how simple or complex each site is. All you have to do is click on the link in each
case, and you'll be taken straight to the site we've chosen. We've done our best to select useful sites that we use ourselves
and with our own elderly students. The sites we've chosen are wherever possible free to access, although some require registration
or occasionally subscription to access certain services or parts of the site. We've also avoided as far as possible sites with
annoying pop-up advertising. Most of our chosen sites will be organisations or stores well known to you. We are not being paid to
promote any of these sites.
We know that some of you might appreciate a little help with "navigating" your way around
the average web page. There is very often so much information on a page, and it's hard to select what you want and keep
track of where you've been. To help you, we have set out a list of tips for using websites. You'll find them on our Simple
Surfing Tips page. We have recently added a Something to Say page posting comments and questions from our readers.
To get started,
scroll to the top of the page and click on any of the page links on the left hand side.
We hope this site will be of assistance
to you as an older person
tackling the Internet, and we wish you success and enjoyment!
Beatrice and Judy
